Swamp Tales Brings Cajun Flavors To Clinton County, IL

What does it taste like? That is a question often heard at Swamp Tales restaurant in Carlyle, Illinois. The query is about the alligator that’s featured here, one of the top, and most unusual, entrees at this Louisiana-themed venue.Photo: Kyaw Tun/Unsplash

Swamp Tales opened last summer in a space that feels a bit like a casual hunting lodge, with mounts hanging throughout the bar area. It’s no surprise then to discover owner Brad Roberts loves to hunt and fish, and what diners see on the walls are his prize catches. Roberts, who has spent a good deal of time in the swamps of Louisiana, is also an avid alligator hunger. Now he is opening the eyes of local diners to the pleasure of that oft-feared beast.

The restaurant and bar sports a Cajun theme and is drawing a faithful following for its tasty food. Top on the list is alligator—a tender, flaky white meat that is offered in several preparations. Swamp Tales serves a good variety of dishes, including sandwiches, catfish, spicy chicken wings, a delicious crawfish étoufée, and a great ribeye special on Friday nights.

Stop by on the weekend and you can enjoy live music well into the wee hours of the morning.
