To say farming is in the blood of the Bizenberger and Eickmeyer families of southernwestern Illinois is an understatement. The clans have more than 100 years and multiple generations of tending their fields and herds of dairy cows. The result is the well-respected Windcrest Dairy. Based in Trenton, Illinois, the company has a big picture view and a local sensibility.
Years before modern milk production took hold, Windcrest Dairy supplied its neighbors with milk, cream and butter. Over the years, with attention to quality and performance, and the introduction of more technology, they were able to grow their herds and their business. And for more than 70 years, the dairy was a major milk supplier to regional co-ops.
Then under the leadership of Steve Eickmeyer and Kurt Bizenberger, fourth and third generation respectively, the company saw an opportunity to produce a variety of fresh dairy products in addition to milk.
Today the Windcrest Dairy lineup includes traditional and Greek-style yogurts; cheeses (supplied by Marcoot Jersey Cheese of Greenville, IL); plus bacon, sausage and other meats.
Though the company has grown over the decades, it has never lost that sense of openness and small-town friendliness. Visitors can get a dose of that attitude on a tour of the operation. While there you can check out the Dairy Store and stock up on some great locally-produced products too.
