The historic former Breese City Hall building seems a fitting place for Nudge Coffee Roasters. The relatively new coffeehouse, an offshoot of Nudge Coffee Roasters in Highland, Illinois, is all about community, so a location in one of the town’s most prized buildings makes perfect sense.
Nudge Coffee Roasters is the brainchild of Joe Ephrem and Maureena Smith, who combined a love of great coffee with a desire to create an alternative to the fast-paced and often impersonal world around us. Their company, whose first store is in Highland—just 20 minutes north of Breese—buys only Fair Trade organic coffee beans and does all its own roasting. So not only are they providing a great outlet for local Illinois communities, but are helping sustain family farmers in other communities as well.
The Nudge setting in Breese features high arched windows and 15-foot ceilings, exuding a cool old-time feel. A friendly staff and “stay-awhile” atmosphere adds to the neighborly charm. Outside, a new sitting garden provides a soothing space for customers to sit and sip.
As with any coffeehouse, the coffee is a main draw, and you’ll find excellent choices at Nudge. Beans are roasted on site and are available, whole or ground, in one-pound bags. Stop by for a cup of the daily roast, or try one of the coffeehouse’s espresso drinks, such as hot and iced lattes. And just because coffee is oh-so good with a sweet, Nudge offers a selection of delicious bakery goods. Recent choices included butter finger cookie sandwiches, house-made vanilla biscotti, and yummy cupcakes. Another healthy option for the morning crowd is cinnamon vanilla steel cut oatmeal, both dairy and sugar-free.
